The hunt has run its fox to ground; hounds crowd in while the field pulls up around them, horses blown and steaming. 'The Death' closes Alken's hunting sequence as tradition demanded — the day painted whole, from the calm of the meet to this — because the sport's meaning sat in the arc, not any single moment of it. the steam rising off the nearest horse's flank, more honest than the drama gathered around the kill. Every hunt ends the same distance from where it started: tired.
