Audubon crowds seven Carolina parakeets — the only parrot native to the eastern United States — into a single flourishing cluster on a cocklebur plant, their green bodies and yellow-orange heads overlapping in a burst of colour that fills the great page. He arranged them so densely partly as design and partly because the birds were social to a fault, flocking to their own fallen and so making themselves easy to shoot. Within a century they were extinct; the last one died in 1918. What was once a nuisance to farmers survives now almost entirely here, in Audubon’s plate — natural history turned, by circumstance, into elegy. Beauty and loss on one sheet.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
