Two fishermen anchor their boat and step onto what looks, from the water, like solid ground: a whale's vast back, mistaken for an island after sand and seaweed gather on its hide. One man kindles a cooking fire; the heat wakes the beast, which plunges, dragging boat and crew down with it — a companion legend to the pelican and the phoenix housed in the very same Getty manuscript, all three illustrating Hugh of Fouilloy's compilation with the same tempera and gold leaf. Medieval commentators read the aspidochelone as the devil himself: a false, solid-seeming safety that gives way the instant a soul settles onto it and lights its fire of sin. The illuminator's real subject is the moment of realization — the sailors' widened faces, one man already falling, the mast still lashed upright a heartbeat before the whole scene capsizes.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
