Bourgery's eight-volume *Complete Treatise* — illustrated by Nicolas Henri Jacob over more than twenty years — is the great masterpiece of 19th-century anatomical art: hundreds of hand-coloured lithographs of surpassing clarity and grace. Jacob had trained under David, and brought a history painter's eye to the operating table; the surgical volumes show procedures drawn from life with a composure that still steadies a reader. The moment when scientific precision and sheer beauty reached their height together.
