Lucy driven past the judges' stand at Buffalo, winning the fourth heat of a $5,000 purse on the ninth of August, 1872. Currier & Ives printed the purse and the heat number because their buyers wanted to own the exact moment a named mare took a named prize, not a generic gallop. The driver's weight thrown back against the reins as the wire comes up. A win gets a number; a legend gets a lithograph.
