Degas found as much in racing's margins as in its races — the amateurs, the carriages, the crowd's in-between minutes are the actual subject here. the carriage wheel cropped hard at the frame's edge, a reminder this is a slice of a much longer afternoon. A race day is mostly waiting, dressed well.
