Icarus has fallen, and three sea nymphs have gathered his body onto a rock — but Draper leaves the enormous bronze-gold wings attached, spread beneath him like a broken altarpiece, so the instrument of the pride and the ruin is still in the picture. The nymphs mourn a boy they never knew. Above, the sky burns out into the white heat that melted the wax. Draper won a Royal Academy gold medal and the painting entered the national collection at once. Ambition, brilliance, and the fall, arranged with real tenderness — the myth everyone recognises the moment they see it.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
