Deep straw banks the walls of the loosebox where a bay racehorse stands, head turned toward the door. Herring's stable interiors were his bread-and-butter work — less grand than the winner's portrait, but they are where his hand is most relaxed, and the horses read as animals rather than trophies. The straw is built up thick against the wall — the everyday comfort a working stable actually gave its champions. Rest is also a kind of record.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
