Jack Spigot stands mounted and gathered, jockey already up, the sky over Doncaster doing most of the talking behind him. Herring painted St Leger winners on commission for decades to come; this portrait is one of the earliest entries in what became his life's ledger. the tension held through the topline, a horse collected and ready rather than merely arranged for the brush. Stillness, held at a gallop's readiness.
