Matilda crosses the Doncaster line in Reeve's engraving after Herring, her mane flattened by a finish the plate captures secondhand. Matilda's St Leger win was notable simply because she was a filly beating the colts, and Reeve's popular print carried that result into houses no oil painting ever reached. the forward stretch of the neck and the flattened mane, the engraver's shorthand for speed a painter would render slower. A filly's win still had to travel by paper.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
