Memnon stands collected with William Scott up, horse and rider composed together as a single, deliberate shape. Scott rode more classic winners than almost any jockey of his generation, and Herring's pairing of the two records a partnership the turf took seriously at the time. the matched angle of the jockey's shoulder and the horse's neck, two lines drawn to agree with one another. The best hands make the horse look easy.
