William Hunter's atlas of the pregnant human form is one of the most powerful works in all of medicine — Jan van Rymsdyk's drawings rendering the subject with a monumental, almost sculptural gravity, unsparing and reverent at once. Hunter's rule was absolute: draw only what is actually there, in this body, on this table — no idealizing, no composite. That discipline made the atlas a landmark of obstetrics and of art, and it is why the plates still hold. A serious, dignified object for the physician or midwife.
