The Body at Life Size
Paolo Mascagni, 1823–1831
No print size passed the check for this piece: at 8 x 10 in, Wrong shape: a 45% crop. We would rather show it than sell a soft print.
See pieces like it you can buyMascagni set out to depict the entire human body at LIFE SIZE, in colour — colossal plates that, assembled, stand as tall as a person. He did not live to see it finished; the atlas was published after his death, at ruinous expense, and few complete copies survive. He was also the great mapper of the lymphatic system, and the precision here is not sacrificed to the scale. The most ambitious anatomical atlas ever produced, and among the most breathtaking: the body as a cathedral, mapped wall to wall.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
