A horse run through its paces across a strip of exposures on Plate 630, motion divided into a row of fixed instants. Muybridge's grids gave physiologists and animators alike a reference no painter's memory could match, the horse pinned down like a specimen for study. The identical background grid lines behind the horse in every frame, holding scale constant. To study motion, first you have to stop it.
