Plate 633 catches a horse and rider frame by frame through a full gallop, the whole action laid out in a row of stopped instants. Muybridge's studies of the mounted gallop gave the sporting print a rival it never fully answered — a document instead of a guess. The rider's crop hand, caught mid-swing in one frame and already still in the next. Stopped time still argues its case.
