Plate 635 closes out the sequence, the horse's stride carried through its final phase before the frames run out. This plate settled, for good, the flying-gallop question painters had guessed at for a century — whether all four hooves ever truly left the ground at once. The last frame in the row, legs gathered under the body at a point no painted horse had ever quite shown. An argument a century old, closed in one strip of film.
