One horse rests its chin along another's neck, the two of them leaning together in open parkland. Stubbs studied herd behaviour as closely as musculature, and this canvas is as much a record of equine temperament — companionship, trust, the specific way horses touch — as it is of anatomy. The exact point of contact, chin to withers — Stubbs paints the gesture as precisely as he paints the ribs beneath it. Affection has its own anatomy.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
