Alert in open country, a Cossack horse holds its ground, ears pricked toward something outside the frame. English painting mostly measured the horse against the Thoroughbred; Ward gave a foreign breed the same close, unflattering study he gave his native stock, at a moment when the Cossack horse's toughness was current news out of the Continental wars. One ear swivels back toward something outside the frame — Ward paints the horse listening, not posing. Alertness is its own conformation.
