Storm light breaks hard across a black horse's coat before the sky closes over him entirely. Ward painted horses the way his Romantic contemporaries painted ruins and cliffs — as subjects worth a mood, not just a measurement — pulling the animal portrait toward a drama Stubbs's generation had refused it. The sky is doing more work than the ground — the drama is entirely overhead, the horse merely standing in it. Weather can be a character, not just a backdrop.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
