Hylas, companion of Heracles, goes to a pool to fill a jar and the naiads rise out of it to take him. Waterhouse crowds seven of them into the dark green water among water lilies, each face a variation on the same calm gaze, one already reaching for his arm. There is no violence in it and no escape either — the trap is entirely made of beauty, which is the point of the story. The pool is painted from real English weeds and reflections, so the myth happens somewhere you could actually stand. The most seductive drowning in Victorian art.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
