Cellarius drew the heavens the way an architect draws a building — in projection, in section, and always in perspective. This plate from the Harmonia Macrocosmica sets the southern constellations on a globe suspended above a landscape, so the viewer stands outside the sky and looks in at it. It is the most theatrical of the celestial atlases and the most sumptuously coloured, printed in Amsterdam at the moment Dutch cartography could afford to be beautiful before it was useful.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
