A WPA Federal Art Project poster for the Tenement House Department of the City of New York, urging residents to keep their buildings clean. Public health, safety, and housing posters were the FAP’s second great subject after the parks — the New Deal made a civic instruction into a printed object worth keeping. A city skyline reduced to the same flat geometric shorthand the FAP used for mountains. The city, cared for the way the wilderness was.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
