Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg's Civitates Orbis Terrarum (1572–1617) did for cities what Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum did for the whole world: gathered uniform, engraved bird's-eye views of Europe's great urban centers into one systematic, wildly popular atlas. This plate, drawn by Joris Hoefnagel, maps Antwerp at the height of its 16th-century power as northern Europe's dominant commercial port — its street grid, star-shaped fortifications, and harbor rendered in obsessive, countable detail, dozens of merchant ships crowding the Scheldt river at left. What to notice: four small figures in Flemish dress stand in the foreground margin, a compositional device Braun and Hogenberg used across the entire atlas to humanize what would otherwise read as a pure surveyor's diagram — a reminder that these were sold as much for civic pride and travel fantasy as for cartographic accuracy.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
