A double-armed cross set with eight roundels at its intersections and terminals — the sole page of this exact design anywhere in the Book of Kells. The number eight carried its own theology for the Insular mind: Christ rose on the eighth day, so eight became the number of Resurrection and of a world made new. Look closely and the geometric calm dissolves into a menagerie — lions with lolling tongues, serpents devouring their own tails, peacocks whose flesh was believed by medieval bestiarists never to decay, all laced into the interstices of the knotwork. Peacocks meant eternal life; serpents shedding skin meant renewal. A carpet page has no text at all — it exists purely as a threshold, a moment of pure pattern the reader's eye must cross before the Gospel proper begins.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
