A nude figure stands within an almond of light, the twelve signs of the zodiac ranged over his body — Aries at the head, Pisces at the feet — each ruling the part it touches. This 'Anatomical Man' closes the calendar pages of the Très Riches Heures, the dazzling book of hours the Limbourg brothers painted for the Duc de Berry around 1416. It is the finest surviving image of a very old idea: that the human body is a small sky, governed limb by limb by the stars above. Painted in lapis and gold, it belongs to medicine as much as to art — the map a physician once consulted before he acted.
