Chéret invented the artistic poster, then curated its canon in Les Maîtres de l’Affiche; this is the founder of the form at full power, in the decade Paris made the street a gallery. The figure is drawn in light, not outline — a handful of stones doing the work of fire. For one decade, the street was the Louvre.
