Lautrec’s poster for Aristide Bruant’s turn at the Ambassadeurs café-concert: the singer in black cape and broad hat, the great red scarf thrown over one shoulder, a silhouette of the crowd behind. Bruant made Lautrec put his name in letters that size or he would not go on — and the bluff produced the defining image of the cafés-concerts. A faithful reproduction of a public-domain lithograph at The Art Institute of Chicago. Four flat colours and a scarf of pure vermilion — the poster carries across a boulevard. The room where the wine went round, distilled to one man’s glare.
