Metlicovitz’s poster for Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, published by Ricordi. Metlicovitz succeeded Hohenstein as Ricordi’s house artist — this poster is the same opera-advertising tradition one generation on. The kimono’s pattern rendered with the same flat, exact color the house used for its most prestigious commissions. A tragedy, sold in the house’s most beautiful colors.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
