The Gorleston Psalter is one of the great East Anglian manuscripts of marginal drollery — the bas-de-page tradition in which illuminators, freed from any doctrinal obligation, filled the blank space beneath the sacred text with hybrid knights jousting oversized snails, musicians with animal heads, and grotesques of every description. This folio sits within that world: a bas-de-page scene of the psalter's characteristic inventive strangeness, rendered in the same confident, fluid line as its full miniatures. Scholars still debate what drolleries meant to their original readers — moral warning, visual pun, or simply delight — but their sheer density across manuscripts like Gorleston makes clear that medieval devotion had room for play directly beside prayer. The psalter's margins are, in a real sense, the id to its text's superego.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
