From Les Roses (1817–1824), Redouté's late-career survey of every rose then cultivated in Europe, painted after Empress Joséphine's death from the collection she built at Malmaison — by then the finest rose garden on the continent, and the reason the empress is still credited with popularizing the genre. This damask variety is rendered with the same stipple-engraving precision Redouté brought to every plate: layered ink passes standing in for watercolor, built up petal by petal rather than laid down as flat color. What to notice: unlike the single specimen studies of his earlier work, Les Roses often groups a full flowering spray — bud, half-bloom, and full bloom on one stem, a small botanical timeline of a single rose's life. Joséphine never lived to see the finished volumes; Redouté completed them as her memorial as much as her patron's legacy.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
