Ripley Scroll — Beinecke Mellon MS 41
Unknown English scribe-illuminator; verses attributed to George Ripley and Richard Carpenter, c. 1570
No print size passed the check for this piece: at 8 x 10 in, Wrong shape: a 87% crop. We would rather show it than sell a soft print.
See pieces like it you can buyOriginally a thirteen-sheet paper roll nearly nineteen feet long, now cut into sections and bound as a book, this copy runs through the full Ripley cycle: a tree growing from a well with figures labeled Spiritus and Anima, a crowned phoenix riding a wave-patterned globe, and red and green lions crouched at a walled fire. Alchemists read each image as a coded step toward the Philosopher’s Stone — the lions standing for the volatile and fixed principles that fire had to reconcile before the Work could proceed. One detail undercuts the whole promise: at the scroll’s very end, past a conspicuously blank space where the finished Stone should appear, a beggar in ragged dress carries a banner reading, in Latin, that he has wasted his time and labor entirely. Few alchemical images admit failure this openly.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
