Hohenstein’s poster for the premiere run of Puccini’s Tosca, published by Ricordi. Ricordi built its house style on Hohenstein’s theatrical, painterly hand — opera advertising treated with the same seriousness as the stage design itself. Tosca rendered mid-gesture, theatrical lighting painted directly into the lithograph. An opera, sold like a painting.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
