A skull set among a guttering candle, a book, and a few scattered flowers — the vanitas, the still-life sermon of the seventeenth century, its every object a reminder that learning, beauty, and life itself run out. The word comes from Ecclesiastes: vanitas vanitatum, 'vanity of vanities, all is vanity.' Printed and painted across the Dutch and Flemish seventeenth century, the vanitas made an art of the memento mori, arranging the emblems of mortality into something almost sumptuous. Here is the type in an engraved plate: the skull at the centre, the candle nearly spent. A picture built, with great care, to make you feel the passing of the time you spend looking at it.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
