A Mexican epiphyte with arching sprays of yellow-green flowers and a honey scent strong enough to fill a glasshouse. Bateman produced only 125 copies of the Orchidaceae, in the largest format ever used for a botanical book — the plates are so big that the standard joke among librarians is that you need a colleague and a strategy. He was 26 when he started it. The largest book of flowers ever made was begun by a man in his twenties.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
