A Central American orchid that carries dozens of small rose-pink flowers on an arching spray and smells, unmistakably, of chocolate and vanilla. It was one of the few orchids of the mania years that would actually grow for an ordinary gardener, which made it enormously popular and — because popularity meant collection — enormously reduced in the wild. Bateman's plate is from the decade before that happened. The ones that were easy to keep were the ones that got taken.
