Stanhopea flowers downward: the spike drives through the compost and out of the bottom of the pot, so a grower who uses a solid one gets nothing at all. Every plant in Europe was killed several times before anyone worked this out. The flowers last three days, smell overwhelmingly of chocolate or vanilla, and are shaped to fit exactly one kind of orchid bee. Bateman's book gave it the largest paper anyone had ever printed a flower on. Three days of flower, and a folio the size of a door to hold it.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
