The bolwarra of the eastern Australian rainforest, a member of one of the oldest surviving lines of flowering plants — its flowers have no true petals, and are pollinated by a single genus of weevil that eats the sterile parts as payment. Bauer drew it without knowing any of that. What he recorded was the structure, exactly, and the structure is what later told the story. A good drawing keeps answering questions nobody had yet thought to ask.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
