The marsh marigold opens in wet ground before almost anything else and is one of the oldest flowering plants in northern Europe, essentially unchanged since before the ice. Besler organised the Hortus by the four seasons — Classis Verna, Aestiva, Autumnalis, Hyberna — so this belongs near the front of the whole enormous book, in the spring class. The order of a garden book is a claim about time. Besler filed his garden by when, not by what.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
