What Catesby called the golden-winged woodpecker is the bird now known as the northern flicker, shown gripping a chestnut oak branch heavy with acorns — Catesby's consistent habit of pairing each animal with a plant from its actual habitat, a compositional choice that functioned as an early, informal argument for ecological relationship decades before the science had a name for it. The flicker's barred back and spotted breast, along with the red crescent marking at its nape, are picked out in fine hand-applied color against the etched line beneath — every plate in the Natural History was colored individually after printing, meaning surviving copies vary somewhat from impression to impression. What to notice: flickers are unusual among woodpeckers for foraging on the ground as often as on trunks, hunting ants and beetles in open soil — a behavioral detail Catesby's static composition can only hint at, but one field naturalists would have already known.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
