An engraved oval, its rim divided into the twelve celestial houses — the fixed compartments of the sky through which the signs and planets were seen to pass — each cusp ruled off and marked with its glyph and degree, a portrait medallion at the centre. The figure is a nativity cast, long after the fact, for Alexander the Great: the kind of retrospective horoscope early-modern astrologers liked to draw for the famous dead. It is a schematic of a complete symbolic architecture — twelve rooms for the whole of a life, hung above the horizon. We frame it as design and as history: the sky drawn as a house with twelve doors.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
