A 1921 German placard for the two-part May-Film epic, designed by Ludwig Hohlwein, the most commercially dominant German poster artist of the period. The script was written by Fritz Lang and Thea von Harbou, and Lang expected to direct it; losing the film to Joe May is one of the pivotal grievances of Weimar cinema. Its architecture of doom fed directly into everything Lang made afterward. Hohlwein's trademark is the flat interlocking colour patch — no outline, no shading, the form built purely from adjacent tones. A monument commissioned early, for someone still breathing.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
