A small Brazilian cattleya with olive-green petals heavily barred in maroon and a lip of magenta so saturated it looks lit from behind. It grows on one particular kind of tree in one dry coastal region of Bahia and nowhere else, which made it precisely the sort of plant the collecting mania of the 1840s was most dangerous to. The Register printed it in the year it flowered in England for the first time. Rarity is a description of a habitat, not a virtue of a plant.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
