The Flora Graeca is the most costly botanical work ever undertaken: Sibthorp travelled the eastern Mediterranean with Ferdinand Bauer in the 1780s, died young, and left his entire estate in trust to publish the results. It took forty years and ten volumes, and only about thirty complete sets were made. Bauer drew every plate from field sketches coded by number, as he later would in Australia. A man left his whole fortune to finish a book he would never see.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
