A Cape daisy whose flowers close overnight and in dull weather and open again with the sun — which made it a difficult subject, since a botanical artist working in a northern winter might never see it open at all. The Schönbrunn glasshouses existed largely to solve exactly that problem: keep the plant alive and warm long enough for the draughtsman to get it. An imperial glasshouse is, among other things, a device for making a flower hold still.
