African wormwood is the most widely used traditional medicinal plant in southern Africa — for fevers, for coughs, for almost everything — and it is a beautiful thing in its own right, finely cut and silver-grey with a resinous smell. It reached Vienna as a curiosity of the imperial collection. The plate records the plant with great care and the knowledge that came with it not at all. The plant crossed the world. What people knew about it did not.
