Jacquin ran the imperial gardens at Schönbrunn and the botanical garden in Vienna, and had been sent to the Caribbean in his twenties by the Emperor with instructions to bring back plants — which he did, in quantity, having survived shipwreck and fever. The four folio volumes of the Schönbrunn plants are the record of what an emperor's collection actually contained in 1800. A shrubby St John's wort from North America, growing in Vienna. The eighteenth century moved plants the way it moved people.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
