Amherstia was described on its discovery as the most beautiful flowering tree on earth, and it hangs its scarlet flowers on pendant sprays a foot and a half long. Berthe Hoola van Nooten drew it in Java, where she had gone as a widow with four children and no money and made a living the only way available to her — by producing, and selling by subscription, one of the finest colour-lithographed flower books of the century. She published a masterpiece because she had no other way to eat.
