The croton has an insignificant flower and spectacular leaves — veined and blotched in yellow, orange, scarlet and green, sometimes all on one plant — and it made the Victorian hothouse mad for foliage. This is one of the plates in van Nooten's book that justifies its title: fleurs, fruits ET FEUILLAGES, flowers, fruit and leaves, given equal billing at a time when European flower books barely acknowledged that a leaf could be the point. Sometimes the flower is the least interesting thing on the plant.
