A deep crimson form of the hundred-petalled rose, named for the English duke. Redouté's method here is stipple engraving printed in several colours at once from a single plate — the colours applied to the plate by hand for each impression, à la poupée — then finished by hand in watercolour. Each print in the original edition is therefore both a print and a painting. That is why the book cost what a house cost. It was never a book. It was a subscription to a workshop.
