The Pompon de Bourgogne is a miniature of the cabbage rose — a flower barely an inch across, packed with so many petals that it opens into a perfect flat rosette like a rosette on a shoe. It was already old when Redouté drew it, a cottage rose that had been passed from garden to garden for generations. The Empress had it at Malmaison alongside everything rare and new. The most valuable garden in Europe made room for a cottage rose.

Notes

Pure white on 4% of the image, mostly the sheet itself: it prints as the paper's white
Soft fine detail at full resolution: smaller sizes print crisper
A plain margin is part of the file (5% of an edge): it prints as part of the picture
